From Ancient Greek ψωρός (psōrós, itchy, scabby) +‎ Ancient Greek τεῖχος (teîkhos, wall, mound, castle) +‎ -ia. Coined by Italian paleobotanist & lichenologist Abramo Bartolommeo Massalongo in 1855.
