From Ancient Greek ψωρός (psōrós, “itchy, scabby”) +‎ Ancient Greek τεῖχος (teîkhos, “wall, mound, castle”) +‎ -ia. Coined by Italian paleobotanist & lichenologist Abramo Bartolommeo Massalongo in 1855.
