Etymology

Potentially attested as ruonwerde in the second half of the 9th century, attested with certainty as rawerth in 1369. Borrowed from West Frisian Raard. If the oldest attestation does in fact refer to the current settlement, a derivation from a compound of Old Frisian Runo (a personal name) and werd (“artificial mound used for habitation”) is possible. If the oldest attestation does not refer to the current settlement, a derivation from Proto-Germanic *hriad (“reed”) and werd is possible. Compare Rauwerd.
