Etymology
First attested as rawertham in the 13th century. Derived from a compound of Proto-Germanic *hriad (“reed”) and Old Frisian werd (“artificial mound used for habitation”). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name. Compare Raard.
