Late 16th or early 17th century calque of Latin ortographia, from Ancient Greek ὀρθογρᾰφῐ́ᾱ (orthogrăphĭ́ā); compare Old High German rehtscrībāri (person who writes correctly), itself a calque of Latin orthographus.[1][2] By surface analysis, recht (proper, correct) +‎ Schreibung (spelling)

Usage notes

  • Compounds are usually formed from the verbal stem rechtschreib-, especially in Rechtschreibfehler and Rechtschreibreform. In less lexicalised compounds both ways are possible (e.g. Rechtschreibfragen or Rechtschreibungsfragen).
