Reconstruction:Latin/praecunctare
Latin
Etymology
From Classical Latin percontārī (“inquire, interrogate”), altered by contamination with the prefix prae- as well as the verb cūnctārī.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /preɡunˈtare/
Verb
*praecūnctāre (Proto-Ibero-Romance)
- to ask
Reconstruction notes
- The per- in reflexes such as Portuguese perguntar are not a direct continuation of the per- in Latin percontārī, but rather a secondary development. This can be inferred from the adjacent consonant, /ɡ/, which must have been preceded by a vowel at the time in which the general lenition of intervocalic /k/ to /ɡ/ was taking place in early Western Romance.
