Etymology

Perhaps from the same source as Pali ๐‘€™๐‘€ซ๐‘†๐‘€ช๐‘‚๐‘€ข๐‘€บ (chambheti, โ€œis stiff, petrifiedโ€), with the prefix ๐‘€†- (ฤ-). Turner suggests a relation with the Sanskrit ๐‘€ฒ๐‘†๐‘€“๐‘€ช๐‘† (skabh, โ€œto prop upโ€) root, from Proto-Indo-European *skebสฐH- (โ€œto supportโ€),[1] whence Vedic Sanskrit ๐‘€ฒ๐‘†๐‘€“๐‘€ซ๐‘†๐‘€ช (skambhรก, โ€œpillarโ€) and ๐‘€†๐‘€ฒ๐‘†๐‘€“๐‘€ช๐‘†๐‘€ฆ๐‘€ธ๐‘€ข๐‘€บ (ฤฬskabhnฤti, โ€œis fixed firmlyโ€).[2]

On the other hand, descendants appear to derive from *๐‘€…๐‘€˜๐‘†๐‘€˜๐‘€๐‘€ช (*accaแนƒbha), for which compare also ๐‘€…๐‘€˜๐‘†๐‘€˜๐‘€ฉ๐‘†๐‘€ช๐‘€ผ๐‘€ฌ (accabbhuya, โ€œvery wonderfulโ€), from Sanskrit ๐‘€…๐‘€ข๐‘†๐‘€ฌ๐‘€ค๐‘†๐‘€ช๐‘€ผ๐‘€ข (atyadbhuta).
