Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰweh₁r-iHnos (or *ǵʰweh₁r-eynos), from *ǵʰwer- (wild animal). By surface analysis, *źwēˀrís +‎ *-īˀnas. Cognate with Latin ferīnus (< Proto-Italic *ferīnos).
