Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *bʰeyh₂- (to hit, strike).[1] The aorist is reconstructed to come from *bʰḗyh₂-s-t ~ *bʰéyh₂-s-n̥t, and the present either from *bʰih₂-yé-ti or derived from the aorist.[2]
