According to Pokorny, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eǵʰ- (“cow”), see also Avestan 𐬀𐬰𐬍 (azī), Old Armenian եզն (ezn), Old Irish ag (“cow”).[1] Matasovic compares *h₂eǵ- (“to drive”), though with a semantic gap.
