Etymology

If the original meaning was "something made of wickerwork," then possibly from an earlier form *flexstrom, from Proto-Indo-European *pleḱ- (to weave, twine), see also Latin plecto, Ancient Greek πλέκω (plékō). Or, from *les- (to collect, gather).
