Etymology

Cognate with Proto-Samic [Term?] (whence Southern Sami giltedh). According to SSA, probably ultimately of sound-symbolic origin.[1]

Alternatively possibly borrowed from Proto-Germanic *glītaną,[2] although such a verb is only attested in West Germanic languages.

  1. to shine, to glitter (to reflect light because of shiny surface)
