Proto-Finnic

Etymology

Possibly borrowed from Proto-Baltic *sturjas (whence Latvian stūris (corner), dialectal Lithuanian stūrỹs, stùris (corner)), or alternatively from Proto-Finno-Permic *śürjä (if cognate with Erzya чире (čire, edge, river bank) and Eastern Mari шӧр (šör, edge)); the two theories are not mutually exclusive, if the word was borrowed early from Balto-Slavic.

Noun

*sürjä

  1. edge, side
  2. hill
  3. (Northern Finnic) aft beam of a loom
