Etymology

From Pre-Germanic *dʰubʰ-néh₂- from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewbʰ- (deep), thus "go deep" > "dive". By synchronic analysis, an iterative verb related to the strong verb *dūbaną (to dive). Compare also West Germanic *duppijan.[1]
