From Proto-Indo-European *pl̥-nó-, from *pel(w)- (a kind of vessel). Cognate with Ancient Greek πέλλα (pélla, milk pail, drinking bowl, goblet), πελλίς (pellís), πελίς (pelís, basin), Old Church Slavonic поль (polĭ, scoop).[1]
