From Proto-Indo-European *gʰórdʰos, from *gʰerdʰ- (“to enclose, encircle”). Cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *gardas (“enclosure”), Albanian gardh (“hedge, fence”), Sanskrit गृह (gṛhá, “house”).[1]
