Etymology

Apparently from a pre-form *gl̥h₁bʰ-o-, of uncertain further origin; often compared to Latin globus (< *gleh₁bʰ-eh₂-) and Lithuanian glė́bti (to embrace, clasp) (< *gleh₁bʰ-ye-ti), Latvian glēba, which are possibly from Proto-Indo-European *gel- (to form into a ball).[1]
