Proto-Germanic

Etymology

From pre-Germanic *wleyd(ʰ)- or *wleyt-. Further etymology uncertain,[1] but probably from an extension of Proto-Indo-European *wel- (to see) (though Kroonen is skeptical of the morphology; compare *wrītaną for this structure), and perhaps influenced by the related iterative *wlittōną (to strive, literally to look repeatedly).[2]

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈwliː.tɑ.nɑ̃/
