Unknown; possibly from Proto-Indo-European *wreyp- / *wrīp-, from a labial extension of Proto-Indo-European *wer- (to turn),[1] whence Ancient Greek ῥίπτω (rhíptō, to throw, cast), though this is disputed.[2][3]
