Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *h₂érh₃trom (“that which is used for ploughing; plough, ard”), from the root *h₂erh₃- (“to plough”) + *-trom (instrument noun suffix). Equivalent to *aroyō + *-tron.
Cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *árˀtla, Proto-Celtic *aratrom, Proto-Germanic *arþrą, Proto-Italic *arātrom (> Latin arātrum) and Old Armenian արաւր (arawr).
