Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂érh₃trom (that which is used for ploughing; plough, ard), from the root *h₂erh₃- (to plough) +‎ *-trom (instrument noun suffix). Equivalent to *aroyō +‎ *-tron.

Cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *árˀtla, Proto-Celtic *aratrom, Proto-Germanic *arþrą, Proto-Italic *arātrom (> Latin arātrum) and Old Armenian արաւր (arawr).
