Etymology

Perhaps from the the BMAC substrate.

Pokorny suggested from Proto-Indo-European *h₂n̥t-ko-s, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ent- (“to weave”) on the basis of Ancient Greek ἄττομαι (áttomai, “to weave”), Albanian end, ent, int.[1] Lubotsky considers this "most probably wrong", presumably given the strange root structure and accentuation.
