    Uncertain; perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *slég⁽ʷ⁾ʰ-se-ti, from *sleg⁽ʷ⁾ʰ- +‎ *-seti. Possibly cognate with Latin langueō (“to be limp, sluggish”), laxus (“spacious, wide, loose”), Old English slæc, Old Saxon slac, Old Norse slakr (“slack”), Old Irish lac (“slack”), Ancient Greek λαγαίω (lagaíō, “to release”).
