Reconstruction:Proto-Japonic/mura
Proto-Japonic
Etymology
Possibly from *mur- (“group; to gather”), reflected in Japanese 群れる (mureru, “to gather”), via an addition of a suffix *-a. 牟羅 (*mura) appears in Old Korean placenames.
Miyake deems resemblance to Old Chinese 里 - which he reconstructs as 里 (OC *mɯ.rəʔ) - to be likely coincidental; as the expected Modern Japanese reflex would be **muro ← **mo1ro2 ← **mo2ro2 [mərə].[1]
Noun
