Likely from Proto-Oceanic *masawaŋ affixed from *sawaŋ (“channel, passage”) thus ultimately from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *sawaŋ (“atmosphere, distance”). Compare with Malay sawang (“expanse”), Iban sawang (“gap”), Tagalog sáwang (“depth”).[1][2][3]
