Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/želbъ
Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Uncertain. Has been compared with Ancient Greek δολφóς (dolphós, “gut”), δελφῡ́ς (delphū́s, “womb”), Sanskrit गर्भ (garbha, “fetus, womb”) from Proto-Indo-European *gʷelbʰ-, however, (per Vasmer) semantically unsatisfactory.[1] Alternatively, akin to Ancient Greek γλάφω (gláphō, “to dig, to hollow”), Proto-Germanic *kulbaz (“round object”), or Proto-Germanic *gulbą (“floor”); the first two would trace to a Proto-Indo-European *gelbʰ- (“to flay, to scrape”), while the third (endorsed by Vasmer) traces to *gʰelbʰ- (“to hollow out; groove, gutter”).[2]
