Archaism of the masculine gender from *kòrva f (cow), which is inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kárˀwas, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱórh₂-wos (horned (animal)), from *ḱerh₂- (head, top; horn). By surface analysis, *kòrva (cow) +‎ *-ъ. Displaced by *bỹkъ (bull) and *vòlъ (ox). Cognate with Proto-Celtic *karwos, Ancient Greek κερᾰός (kerăós), Latin cervus.
