From *mьr- +‎ *-ěti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *mir-, from Proto-Indo-European *mr̥-, from *mer- (to shimmer, shine). Cognate with Sanskrit मरीचि (marīci).

  1. to barely visible, flickering, glimmering
