Proto-Slavic

Etymology

From *pro- + an element *sinьcь of unclear origin. Multiple theories exist:

  • From *sijati (to shine, glow) referring to the winter solstice. This appears to be the most commonly accepted theory.[1][2]
  • From *siňь (gray) because of the darkness of December nights. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
  • Christian sources derive it from *prositi (to pray) referring to Christmas. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)

Noun

*prosìnьcь m[1]

  1. first month after Winter solstice (corresponds to December or January)
    Synonym: *kologъ
