From Proto-Balto-Slavic *sleiˀm-, from Proto-Indo-European *sleh₁y-m-, from the root *sleh₁y-, *sley- (smooth, slick, sticky, slimy). Cognate with Ancient Greek λεῖμαξ (leîmax, slug), Latin līmāx (slug).
