Per Derksen, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)wendʰ-. Cognate with Proto-Slavic *svędnǫti, Old High German swintan (“to shrink, to fade”), German schwinden (“to shrink, to fade”), Old English swindan (“to subside, to fade”).
