Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *weiśinjāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *weyḱs- (“mistletoe”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *wīhsilō (“type of cherry”), Ancient Greek ἰξός (ixós, “mistletoe, birdlime”), and Latin viscum (“birdlime”).
