From *bür (“leaf, bud”) + *-ge. Alternatively, from Proto-Turkic *bürü- (“to cover up, to dig oneself in”).
Compare Proto-Indo-European *plúsis and Proto-Afroasiatic *pVrɣVč (“flea”).
