Schlafes Bruder

German

Etymology

Literally, sleep's brother. The image is based on a stanza of the Lutheran hymn Du, o schönes Weltgebäude (1649): Komm, o Tod, du Schlafes Bruder (Come, o death, you brother of sleep), a reference to Thanatos, twin brother of Hypnos, the good of sleep. More recently popularized as the title of the 1992 novel Schlafes Bruder, and its 1995 film adaption.
