Schlafes Bruder
German
Etymology
Literally, “sleep's brother”. The image is based on a stanza of the Lutheran hymn Du, o schönes Weltgebäude (1649): Komm, o Tod, du Schlafes Bruder (“Come, o death, you brother of sleep”), a reference to Thanatos, twin brother of Hypnos, the good of sleep. More recently popularized as the title of the 1992 novel Schlafes Bruder, and its 1995 film adaption.
