First attested as A. Rodae Comitis in the 12th century. Compound of Sint (“saint”), Oda (a personal name) and rode (“land cleared of trees”). Named after Saint Oda of Scotland, who fled from Scotland to Brabant and became a hermit, reportedly somewhere near the future city.
