Etymology
Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Germanic *skadwaz (“shadow”), or from a lost name of a geographical place. It could also related to skaði (“harm”). Possibly the first element in Scandinavia and Scedeland.

Declension
The declension of the name is uncertain since it is only attested in the nominative in older sources. In modern Icelandic it is declined as masculine n-stem, but may originally have been a feminine īn-stem. It is in any case grammatically feminine (compare Sturla)
