Etymology

  • As a Serbo-Croatian and Slovene surname, nickname for a Turkish refugee, from uskočiti (to flee) (compare Czech utéct). Also a nickname from the verb skok (to jump). This is also sometimes found as a Polish surname from the same verb skok.
  • As a Jewish (Lithuania and Latvia) surname, from Skoki, the Polish and Russian name for Skakai, a small town in Kriukai in Lithuania.
