Etymology
First attested as stavron in the 10th or beginning of the 11th century. Presumably derived from the dative plural form of Old Frisian staver (“pole”). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an older version of the Frisian name. Compare Spijkenisse, Staverden, Stavenisse and Stavern.
