Etymology
- (Friesland) First attested as Fesckbueren and Vischburen in 1511. Calque of West Frisian Fiskbuorren, a compound of fisker (“fisherman”) and the plural form of buer (“house, cottage”).
- (Noord-Holland) Compound of vis (“fish”) and buurt (“neighbourhood, quarter”). The majority of the neighbourhood's early inhabitants were fishermen.
