Zittard
Dutch
Etymology
Both toponyms are presumably derived from Middle Dutch sitter (“common land”) (indirectly derived from Latin sectura (“common land”)) with epenthetic -t. An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from Old High German sigituri (“section of forest intended for logging”) (derived from Latin secretarium). Compare Sittard, Zijtaart and Zittert. See also Limburgish 't Zittert, 't Zitterd.
- (Limburg) First attested as Ingen Sittardt in 1612.
