First attested as Sithert between 1135 and 1180. Etymology uncertain. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from Old High German sîte (“mountainside”), Latin secretarium (“section of forest intended for logging”) or sectura (“common land”). Compare Zijtaart, Zittard and Zittert.
