  • (Drenthe) First attested as suthwalda in 1275. Compound of zuid (“south-, southern”) and wold (“marsh forest, swamp forest”). See also Dutch Low Saxon Zuudwolde.
  • (Groningen) First attested as up zutywolde in 1399. Compound of zuid (“south-, southern”) and wold (“marsh forest, swamp forest”). The element zuid was added to distinguish the settlement from Noordwolde. See also Dutch Low Saxon Zuudwôlde.
