From Middle High German twenge and Middle Low German dwenge (“constraint, clamp”), derived from Middle High German twengen (“to squeeze, force, cram”) (> modern German zwängen) and Middle Low German dwengen (“to squeeze, press”). Cognate with Danish tvinge and German Zwang.
