Borrowed from Ancient Greek ἀφαίρεσις (aphaíresis, “a taking away”), from ἀφαιρέω (aphairéō, “to take away from”), from ἀπό (apó, “away from”) + αἱρέω (hairéō, “to take, grasp, seize”).
