Gustav Meyer didn't include it in his dictionary. Eqrem Çabej attempts a derivation from Turkish and affirms it is a relatively new word. Vladimir Orel, probably convinced by Eqrem Çabej's proposal, ignores it. Ardian Vehbiu, who usually does not deal with etymologies, proposes a derivation from the Italian expression va fatto (“it must be done”) and compares it to the Albanian word apostafat, which comes from the Italian apposta fatto.^[1]

A formation from Proto-Albanian *apo-t-is, based on Proto-Indo-European *h₂epó (“away, off”), with the labial plosive followed by back vowel yielding -f- (cf. avull, afër), and -is-, as well as -os-, yielding zero in unstressed position. Cognate to Proto-Germanic *aftiz (“again”) (whence Old English eftesoons (“again, soon”) > English after). Related to afër. (Can this⁽⁺⁾ etymology be sourced?)
