Dutch

Etymology

From Middle Dutch almechtich, from Old Dutch *alamahtīg (debatably attested in the Old Saxon Baptismal Vow, the linguistic classification of which is unclear and which contains Old Dutch features), from Proto-Germanic *alamahtīgaz. By surface analysis, almacht +‎ -ig, although in fact almacht is a back-formation from the adjective; alternatively may be interpreted as al- +‎ machtig.
