From Middle English allwaye, alle wey, from Old English ealneġ, ealne weġ (“always, perpetually”, literally “all the way”), from ealne + weġ (accusative case), equivalent to al- (“all”) +‎ way. Cognate with Scots alwayis (“always”). More at all, way.
