Etymology

From amiskwâciy (“Beaver Hills”) +‎ wâskahikanihk (“at the house [fur trade post]”) or "at the Beaver Hills House", in turn from amisk (“beaver”) +‎ wâciy (“hill”) and wâskahikan (“house”) +‎ -ihk (“at”). The Cree term wâskahikanihk (“at the house”) was also used in other regions as the names for Grouard, Alberta and Cumberland House, Saskatchewan. Compare Ojibwe waakaa'igan (“house, building”).
