Inherited from Old French arismetique, borrowed from Latin arithmētica (arithmetic), itself borrowed from Ancient Greek ἀριθμητική (arithmētikḗ), ellipsis of ἀριθμητικὴ τέχνη (arithmētikḕ tékhnē, art of counting), from ἀριθμός (arithmós, number).
