From the univerbation of assì +‎ sì, literally “this very way”, reduplication of Sicilian assì. Technically from the Latin phrase ac +‎ sīc +‎ sīc. Compare Old Galician-Portuguese assi (and Portuguese assim), Romanian așa, Spanish así.
