From Proto-Gbe *atɔ̃́ or *à-tɔ̃́ɔ̃.[1] Cognates include Fon atɔ́n, Saxwe Gbe atún, Adja atɔn, Gun atɔn, Ayizo àtɔ́n, Western Xwla Gbe atɔn, Maxi Gbe àtɔ́n and Gen àtɔ́n.
