Etymology
From ate (“any organ”) + wharowharo (“to expectorate”). Compare with Hawaiian akemāmā, Rarotongan atemāmā (< + Proto-Polynesian *maqamaqa corresponding to māmā) and Fijian yatevuso (< + Proto-Oceanic *puso) for similar constructions in related languages.[1]
