Etymology

From ate (any organ) +‎ wharowharo (to expectorate). Compare with Hawaiian akemāmā, Rarotongan atemāmā (< + Proto-Polynesian *maqamaqa corresponding to māmā) and Fijian yatevuso (< + Proto-Oceanic *puso) for similar constructions in related languages.[1]
